A juvenile boy attempting to deliver contraband on Saturday to the Westville
Correctional Facility (WCC) was apprehended, the Indiana Department of
Correction (DOC) said.
According to a statement released on Monday, a staffer reporting to work
around dawn on Saturday observed a vehicle parked on the side of the road
next to WCC property. The staffer notified security but as the vehicle was
approached it left at a high rate of speed. Security personnel did see
footprints in the snow where the vehicle had been parked, followed them, and
found a boy in dark clothing kneeling behind a snow bank with multiple
bundles near him.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Police and the Indiana State Police were
dispatched to the scene and the boy—whose name is being withheld—was
questioned and detained.
Among the items recovered from the bundles were 13 cell phones, several
pounds of tobacco, and a quantity of identified pills. The ISP is
investigating the incident in conjunction with WCC Internal Affairs to
determine whether any charges will be filed.
“This is an example of the cooperation necessary between our facility and
local law enforcement that results in a higher level of safety and security
for both the facility and the public,” Superintendent William Wilson said.
“The diligence
of correctional staff and our teamwork with local law enforcement is
required to stem the ongoing trafficking attempts at our facilities,” DOC
Commissioner Ed Buss said.
