Scrap metal scavengers in Portage now need to be licensed

Back to Front Page

Portage Police will begin strictly enforcing a city ordinance which forbids persons not properly licensed to scavenge refuse left at curbside.

According to a statement released today, anyone found violating this ordinance will be subject to a citation issued by a police officer and will be held responsible for all costs.

Those wishing information on the licensing process and required fee may contact the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office at 762-7784 and speak with Ellen Mesich, the statement said. The licensing process includes an application, information on vehicle inspections, fees associated with the licensing process, and insurance required of persons collecting scrap refuse within city limits.
