An inmate at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City was stabbed to death
on Friday, the Indiana Department of Correction (DOC) said.
The victim was
identified as Jeffrey Carter, 48.
According to a
statement released by the DOC, the stabbing occurred at 8:50 a.m. on the 200
range of D Cell House East Side. Carter was taken to the Medical Services
Unit at the prison and then transported to St. Anthony Memorial Medical
Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:16 a.m.
“Several
potential suspects have been identified but are not being named at this time
as the investigation continues,” the DOC said.
The
investigation is being conducted by the Indiana State Police, the DOC added,
and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office has been notified.
Carter was
serving two concurrent felony sentences from Marion County: 55 years for
attempt to commit murder and one year for possession of an unpermitted
handgun. His earliest possible release date was March 28, 2024.
