VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Jurors have found a gunman guilty of attempted murder in the shooting of an Indianapolis police officer during a foot chase.

Thirty-seven-year-old Brian Reese could face up to 59 years in prison.

Jurors deliberated about an hour Tuesday before convicting Reese in the July 2008 shooting of Officer Jason Fishburn, who was wounded in the head and suffers permanent brain damage.

Defense lawyers argued Reese didn’t intend to kill Fishburn and should be convicted of a lesser charge. But prosecutors convinced the jury that Reese deliberately shot Fishburn.

The trial was held in Valparaiso in northwest Indiana because of publicity about the shooting in Indianapolis.
