Two Chesterton brothers were arrested Sunday on a charge of forgery after Burns Harbor Police said that one of them passed a phony $20 bill at the McDonald’s at the Pilot Travel Center at 243 U.S. Highway 20.

Charged were Kevin Leo Milletary, 33, and Matthew Robert Milletary, 35, both of 1621 Putter Parkway, police said.

Burns Harbor Town Marshal Jerry Price told the Chesterton Tribune today that the investigation actually began on Oct. 6, when a clerk at the Luke’s One Stop at Ind. 149 and U.S. Highway 20 reported that a white male subject had used what appeared to be a phony $20 bill to purchase a can of pop. BHPD confirmed that the bill was a counterfeit and began notifying businesses in the area to be alert for fake bills, Price said.

Then, late on Sunday morning, a clerk at the McDonald’s contacted the BHPD to report that a man in a white van had just tried to pass a counterfeit $20, Price said. That suspect had left the scene but, at 12:09 p.m., an Ogden Dunes police officer located him in a white van on Ind. 249 and took him into custody, Price said.

The suspect, identified as Kevin Milletary, was transported to Porter County Jail.

Matthew Milletary was taken into custody at 7:30 p.m. at a different location and also transported to Porter County Jail, Price said.

The U.S. Secret Service has been informed and has become involved in the case, Price added.

Price praised the McDonald’s clerk for her quick-thinking. “What a heads-up move to recognize the fake bill while dealing with so much currency,” he said. “It was outstanding work on her part.”
