Services set for Mildred Schlene

Jackson Township resident Mildred Mary Schlene, 84, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Michigan City.

She was born April 15, 1925, in Pope County, Minn., the daughter of John Boothe and Louise (Fritcher) Wolford, who preceded her in death.

On Nov. 11, 1944, in Westville, she married Carl Henry Schlene Sr., who survives in Jackson Township.

She is also survived by three children, Carl Henry (Deborah) Schlene Jr. of Michigan City, LaRue Welkie of Jackson Township, and Eric (Vickie) Schlene of West Lafayette, Ind.; five grandchildren, Dawn Welkie, Kimberly Schlene, Rachel Schlene, Martin Schlene, and Henry Schlene; three great-grandchildren, Nick, Gloria, and J.C.; and a sister, Evelyn Kosanke of California.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Gertrude Wood and her brother John Wolford, Jr.

Mildred was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chesterton. A homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and canning vegetables grown in Carl’s garden.

Funeral services, Pastor Erich R. Fickel officiating, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at St. Paul Lutheran, 105E 1100N, with burial to follow at Westville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St. in Chesterton and Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. until time of service at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
