Portage resident John “Coules” Coulopoulos passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13,
2010 in Valparaiso. He was 86.
Born November 21, 1923 in Norwich, Conn., he was the son of Theodore and
Angela (Gregoropoulos) Coulopoulos, who preceded him in death. John was
married to Bonnie (Allred) Coules, who survives in Portage.
He is also survived by his sons Theodore John Coulopoulos (wife Linda Bakos)
of Chesterton, Peter Gregory (Kelly) Coulopoulos of Valparaiso, and Jonathan
Gregory Coules (Daniella) of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Bevan, Bennett,
Aristotle, Galen, Theran, Theodore, Angela, Clara, and Alexander; and
sisters, Constance Coulopoulos and Diane Coulopoulos, both of Belmont, Mass.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter and Paul.
John was an area resident since 1964 and was a member of St. Iakovos Church
in Valparaiso. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War
II as a Naval Aircraft Carrier Fighter Pilot and Naval Officer. John was the
owner of the former Coules Cartage, which operated as one of the largest
trucking concerns in the Midwest. He was also the owner of Western Scrap
Corp.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St.
Iakovos Church, 352 Chicago St., Valparaiso, with Rev. Fr. James Greanias
officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Mount Auburn Cemetery,
Cambridge, Mass. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 17 from 2 to 6 p.m.
at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage.
