Arthur Cobbs dies at 85

Arthur J. Cobbs, 85, of Auburn, died Friday, September 11, 2009 at Dekalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn.

He was born March 14, 1924 in Kendallville the son of Harley and Emma (DeBrian) Cobbs, both of whom preceded him in death.

On October 29 in the Cedar Lake parsonage, he married Martha Eileen Biddle, who preceded him in death August 10, 2000.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Arthur Eugene and Marlene Cobbs, of Chesterton and Steven Brent Cobbs of Auburn; two daughters, Judy Kay Varnau of Bunker Hill and Cathy Ann Cobbs of Kokomo; one brother and a sister-in-law, Carl and Pat Cobbs of Corunna; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Esther Andrus of St. George, Utah, Eleanor Fee of Waterloo and Shirley and David Ely of Waterloo; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Cleo Cobbs, Jack Cobbs, Harley Cobbs Jr. and Delbert Cobbs.

Arthur was a truck driver for the Howard Sober Company in Fort Wayne, retiring in November of 1982. He was also a DeKalb Country farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was a member of the Cedar Lake Church of the Brethren in rural Auburn. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 86 of Kendallville and the Teamsters Local 414.

Funeral services, Pastor Duane Grady officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 16 at Feller & Clark Funeral Home, 1860 S. Center St., Auburn. Interment will be in Christian Union Cemetery in rural Garrett with graveside military rites being conducted by the Francis Vineyard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2749 of Kendallville.

Visitation will be from 4-6 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
