Services Friday for Gordon Lee 'Rusty' Tharp

Gordon Lee Tharp, “Rusty”, passed on June 21, 2020, in Michigan City, Indiana, surrounded by his family following an automobile accident.

He was born in Chesterton, Indiana, to George and Edna Tharp on April 30, 1942.

Rusty married Patricia Hauber on November 5, 1966, at St. Patrick’s Church in Chesterton. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia Tharp, his children Gordon Tharp Jr. (Rachel) of Burns Harbor, Karen Warner of Michigan City, Jason Tharp of Rolling Prairie, Tina Simms (Michael) of Chesterton, his grandchildren Ashley Lee (Chris), Gordon Tharp III (Corinna), Paige Washington (Ryan), Nicolas Tharp, Tyler Warner, Timber Whittemore, great-grandchildren Leon and Ethan Lee, and Lola and Ryan Washington. Also surviving are his brothers Gerry, Don (Judy), Tim, Terry (Judy), and Scott (Stacy), along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers Keith “Hank”, John, Dan, and Michael.

Following high school, he proudly served his country from 1960-1963 in the United States Navy as a machinist’s mate onboard the USS William C. Lawe DD763. Rusty returned home and worked for US steel for 21 years, and then ISC in Gary, Indiana where he worked until his retirement in 2007.

Those who knew Rusty knew he never met a stranger, and he always had a joke. He enjoyed golfing and many other outdoor activities. Rusty enjoyed doing yard work, including his neighbors when he ran out of his own. He enjoyed his monthly breakfast with his buddies. Rusty cherished his retirement, trips with his wife, and time spent with family and friends.

A Funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2020, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home at 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 26, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Social & Learning Institute, 201 E. Garfield St., Michigan City, IN 46360.

Patricia would like to thank the EMT’s for their immediate actions, as well as Franciscan Health’s ER and ICU staff for their care, kindness, support, and compassion shown to her husband and family during their most difficult time.
