Memorial Mass Monday for Walter Earl Petersen, 99

Walter Earl Petersen, age 99 of Chesterton, IN, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2020.

He was born on December 8, 1920, in Chicago, IL, to Peter and Hazel (Coleman) Petersen.

Walter is survived by his two sons, Robert (Kathleen) Petersen of Galena, IL, Thomas (Sharon) Petersen of Rincon, GA; two granddaughters, Heather (Kris) Woods, Lisa (Michael ) Wilson; two grandsons, Robert (Zandra) Petersen, Kenneth John (Leah) Petersen; two great-grandsons, Ian Woods and Mecani Petersen; four great-granddaughters, Lily Woods, Bailee Wilson, Courtney Petersen, Shelby Wilson; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Alice (Earley) Petersen; his parents, Peter and Hazel Petersen; two brothers, George Petersen and William Petersen; and two sisters, Margaret and Doris.

Walter was a United States Army Veteran and served in the 35th Infantry Division of Patton’s 3rd Army. Walter entered the European Theatre of Operations in June of 1944 and served there until October of 1945. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Chesterton and retired as a Roller from ArcelorMittal following many years of service.

Walter’s family would like to extend their deep, heartfelt thanks to the staff of Addison Point Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chesterton, as well as the nurses and staff of Dunes Hospice, for the amazing care they showed to Walter.

Memorial Mass for Walter will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2020, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton, IN, 46304, with Fr. John Plavcan officiating. Due to COVID restrictions, attendance at mass will be limited and masks or facial coverings are required for entry into the church.

Walter will be interred at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Chesterton immediately following mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Chesterton, IN.
