Anna Maria Spahic passes away at age 89

Anna Maria Spahic (nee Porcelli), age 89, passed away on May 10, 2020.

She was born on September 8, 1930, in Salerno, Italy, the daughter of Pasquele and Giuseppina Porcelli.

She was a member of St. Sava Serbia Orthodox Church. She traveled to the United States with her new husband at the age of 19 to start a life in America. Soon after, they moved to Northwest Indiana where she spent the remainder of her life. In her early years, she loved cooking holiday meals for her family and would watch over them as they enjoyed celebrating. She spent the last six years of her life at Addison Pointe in Chesterton. She was fondly referred to as ‘Queen Anna’ and won many BINGO and Pokeno games. She loved to save her winnings, which were mostly sweets, to give to her great-grandchildren when they would visit. She also loved to visit the casino. She was a feisty woman who enjoyed her morning coffee, knitting, watching birds from her window, and telling stories about her life in Italy.

Anna is survived by her family Đ daughter Maria (Dennis) Neuwirth, Hebron; son Nenad Spahic, Roselawn; daughter Danica Thomas, Portage; grandchildren Đ Michael (Susan) Neuwirth; Denise (Michael) Wright; Mark (Karyn) Neuwirth; Andrew Thomas; Ronald (Shannon) Thomas; great-grandchildren Đ Jacob, Matthew, and Jackson Wright; Christopher, Abigail, and Jenna Neuwirth; Ryland Neuwirth; and Olivia Thomas.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Radivoje Spahic and son, Simo Spahic.

A private burial will take place at Calumet Park Cemetery.
