Celebration of Life Saturday for Harriet LaVerne 'Fern' Duvall

Back To Front Page

Fern Duvall (nee Harriet LaVerne Postgate), age 85, changed her address on October 29, 2019, to her eternal home in Heaven.

Fern temporarily leaves behind her husband of 65 years, “Bud” Clayton Duane Duvall, Sr., to hold the family together.

Fern was born April 13, 1934, in Brownsville, PA, to Neva Mastile (Hickle) and Richard Postgate.

Fern grew up in a large, loving, extended family, with many aunts, cousins, and loving grandparents, Harry and Effie Hickle, and step-father John Mastile Sr. Fern has a brother, John Mastile of Valparaiso, IN, and sister, Cheryl (Scott) Johnson of Tulsa, OK.

On May 14, 1954 Fern married the love of her life, “Bud” Clayton Duane Duvall Sr.

Over their lifetimes they truly became one. They raised three children, Duane (Linda) Duvall of Chesterton, IN, Kim Scott of Wisconsin Dells, WI, and David Duvall of Porter, IN.

Fern was a strong and faith-filled woman who loved deeply and fought for what she believed in. Fern touched many hearts and moved mountains when she had to. One of the greatest joys in life was her six grandsons, Joshua Duvall, Korey (Samantha) Duvall, Bryant (Trisha) Donnella, Matthew (Karen) Donnella, Max Donnella and Paul Scott. Just when Fern thought life could get no better, girls appeared in the shape of beautiful great-grandchildren, Kylee Donnella, Gwen Donnella, Ivy Donnella and Hannah Jarroll, and three wonderful great-grandsons, Kaden Donnella, Thomas Donnella and Axl Duvall. Fern worked over 20 years at Westchester Public Library where she was known as the Story Time Lady. Fern loved her job and every story she told. Fern was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Porter and could often be found running a committees, teaching Sunday School or in the pulpit. Her heart for God was not just what she did, it was who she was.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 1, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Porter United Methodist Church, 100 Beam St., Porter, IN 46304.

Come help us celebrate this extraordinary woman who loved fiercely and unconditionally. Fern's verse she lived by was Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". May He strengthen us all as we send her home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Porter United Methodist Church.
