Services Tuesday for John A. Crakes

John A. Crakes, age 71, of Chesterton, IN, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018, at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso, IN.

He was born on September 5, 1946, in Michigan City, IN, to Harry and Lorraine (Novak) Crakes

John is survived by his wife: Lena Crakes; daughter: Ali (Leon) Franzen; stepsons: Rob and Darren Stout; grandchildren: Julian, Ben and Ivy Franzen, and Shane and Tuesdai Stout; mother: Lorraine R. (Novak) Crakes; sisters: Diane (Keith) Morris and Chris (Ed) Bowmar; numerous loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Harry Crakes.

John graduated from Marquette High School where he excelled in sports. He was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam in the 7th Battalion 13th Artillery from 1966 to 1968. He took classes at Purdue and then became an electrical apprentice. He was a member of IBEW Local 531, LaPorte. John supervised many new buildings in the area including Chesterton High School. His career ended in 2007 when he retired.

He fought a tough battle in Vietnam and returned to battle in his fight against cancer. He was a loving husband and father and will be missed by his family.

Those wishing to pay their respects are invited to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, located at 613 Washington St. Michigan City, IN 46360, on Monday, August 13, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at Notre Dame Catholic Church located at 1005 Moore Road, Michigan City, IN.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Keith McClellan officiating.

Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Michigan City, IN.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of John may be given for advanced education of some worthy students at Marquette High School.
