Services Friday for Philip A. 'Pat' Tomkinson

Philip A. “Pat” Tomkinson, age 92, of Portage, IN, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, in Valparaiso, IN.

He was born in Buffalo, NY, on January 20, 1926, to Philip A. and Florence (Hitzel) Tomkinson.

Pat served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war he played division softball with the Regime. He played ball from 1944-1957, he started in D-division and ended up in Triple A. He played with Tommy Lasorda and Willie Mays during his career, he played for many teams including; Olean Oilers, Valdosta GA, Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Rockville, TN, Minneapolis, MN, Ottawa, Canada, Nashville, TN, Buffalo, NY, and he participated in Spring Training with the Giants in 1950. Pat worked for Sears Company from 1956-1964 and Bethlehem Steel from 1964-1983 when he retired. After retirement he helped coach State Park Little League and was equipment manager for Pop Warner. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame, the Raiders, Yankees and his star ball player, his great grandson, Tyler Nelson.

Pat is survived by his children, Tim Tomkinson of IN, Tracy (Dave) Kenly of AZ, and Kim (Rick) Ludwig of GA; step-children, Robin Hood of IN, Chuck (Cheryl) Hood of IN, Rex Hood of IN, Carl (Elaine) Hood of TX, and Marjorie (John) Judy of IN; brother, Wayne Tomkinson of NY; sister, Linda (Rand) Hunt of IN, and sister-in-law, Helen Tomkinson of NY. He is also survived by three grandchildren, 16 step-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren, 18 step great great-grandchildren and one great great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda M. Tomkinson in 2016, and brothers, Robert, Roy, and Thomas Tomkinson.

Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, February 9, 2018, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Swan Lake Cemetery in Michigan City, IN.
