A memorial service
for the late Dale Engquist--the longtime superintendent of Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore--will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Dunes Learning
Center, 700 Howe Road in Porter.
Arrive at 10:45
a.m. Wear comfortable clothing, jeans are acceptable.
At 11 a.m. friends
and family will share happy memories, followed by lunch at 12 p.m. and
mixing at 1 p.m.
At 2 p.m. guests
may leave or celebrate Engquist’s life and work by taking a hike and
exploring the Dunes.
Donations may be
made in Engquist’s memory to the Dunes Learning Center, Save the Dunes, or
the Shirley Heinze Land Trust.
In the event of
rain, indoor accommodations will be available.
Engquist died on
June 4, 2017, at the age of 77. He began his career with the National Park
Service in 1964 and came to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1978 as
assistant superintendent. In 1983 he succeeded to the superintendency and
served nearly 24 years until his retirement in 2007. Under Engquist’s
leadership, the National Lakeshore grew in size by 15 percent and became a
destination for 2 million visitors every year.
