Velsie J. Burton,
age 96 of Chesterton, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Porter
Regional Hospital.
She was born on
January 6, 1920, in Mason City, Iowa to Marion and Mae (Hudson) Richardson.
On June 3, 1937,
she married Bloyd Burton. They were married for 73 wonderful years.
She was preceded in
death by both of her parents, husband, and brother, Merle Richardson.
She is survived by
her children: Carol (Richard) Wilson of Chesterton and Richard (Darlene)
Burton of Porter; her grandchildren Richard Burton, Patricia (Wayne)
Sullivan, Michelle (Colin) Smith, and Candy Wilson; and three
great-grandchildren Ashley Vogedes, Cole Smith, and Madison Smith.
Velsie was a member
of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Save the Dunes Council, and a proud supporter
of St. Jude Children’s Hospital. She was certified by the Sherwood Music
School as a piano teacher in 1937. In her earlier years, she enjoyed playing
the piano at the E.U.B. Church in Porter and was also the pianist at
Chesterton High School for plays and musicals. Velsie was a world traveler.
She traveled with her husband to Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. She also
enjoyed gardening, writing poetry, short stories, and spending time with her
family.
Funeral services
will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016, at 11 a.m. at White-Love Funeral
Home, 525 South Second Street, Chesterton, with Pastor Erik Grayvold
officiating.
The family will
receive friends on Thursday, December 29, 2016, from 4 until 8 p.m. at
White-Love Funeral Home.
