Services Thursday for Lorraine Mohnssen

Lorraine Mohnssen, age 77 of Chesterton, Ind., passed away Friday, August 8, 2014.

She was born on November 18, 1936, in LaPorte, Ind., to Edwin F. and Edna (Hineline) Mohnssen, both of whom preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Edwin G. Mohnssen, infant sister Marlene, “Rat” brothers, Tom Lindquist and Skip Highwood, and her beloved dog Max.

She is survived by her lifelong childhood friend, Patty Bergren of Chesterton, she was loved like a sister by all members of the “Cheesetown Rats” especially, Louie Meyne, Len Jersey, Denny Dille, Roger Hewitt and Ron Wycoff. She loved and was loved by her Chesterton Fire Department Family and Chesterton Police Department Family. Lorraine was loved and will be greatly missed as “Aunt Lorraine” to the Highwood Family.

Affectionately known as the “Queen of Chesterton” Lorraine truly loved her extended “family.” She attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for ten years. She was a fixture at The Hideaway and Lynnie’s, where she tended bar for many years. Lorraine worked as a grounds keeper at the Chesterton Cemetery until the time of her death. She was a member of the Duneland Historical Society, a founding member of the Chesterton Adult Athletic Booster Club and a board member of the Warren “Skip” Highwood Memorial Foundation. Lorraine was always the first to volunteer for the Chesterton Fire Department for all of their functions and was known as the “Popcorn Lady” for twelve of the thirteen years of the Chesterton Fire Department Street Dance. She played Santa’s Elf for Shop with a Cop every year in Chesterton and always played “Flobird the Jailbird” with the Chesterton Police at the many festivals downtown. Lorraine loved all children and often said “she never met a bad kid.” You could often find her at children’s birthday parties playing her famous clown, or Santa at Christmas. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, Ind., with Pastor Cathy Allison officiating.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Shop with a Cop (Chesterton PD), The Chesterton Fire Department, The Warren “Skip” Highwood Memorial Foundation or to VNA Hospice, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, IN, 46383, and also the Lorraine Mohnssen Memorial Fund at any 1st Source Bank.
