Madelyn Hawkes dies at 90

Madelyn “Lena” Hawkes, 90, of Chesterton, Ind., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014.

She was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Chicago, the daughter of Alex and Katherine (Lapentino) Relle, who preceded her in death. She was married to Marvin Hawkes, who survives of Chesterton.

She is also survived by her sons, Joseph (wife Donna) Reyes of LaPorte, Ind., and Dennis (wife Bonita) Rye of Harvard, Ill.; a daughter, Madelyn (husband George preceded) Dantona of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren Nicole (Tony) McIntosh, Elizabeth and Sarah Rye, and Christopher, Terra and Ariel Dantona; and great-grandchildren Mason and Miles McIntosh.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph Reyes Sr. and Raymond Graham; by a son, Wayne Reyes; and by her six siblings.

Madelyn moved to Northwest Indiana from Chicago in 1984. She was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Royal Neighbors of America, the Westchester Public Library Senior Club, and the Hawthorne Park Senior Club. She retired from food services in the childcare industry.

There will be no services at this time. Burial will take place at Irving Park Cemetery in Chicago.

Arrangements are being handled by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway in Chesterton.
