Donald Lorenz, age
79 of Chesterton, Ind., passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in Norcross,
Ga.
He was born June
10, 1934 in Chesterton, Ind., to Charles and Carrie (Brown) Lorenz.
On June 16, 1956,
he married Marlene Kirchoff in Rialto, Calif.
He is survived by
his wife, Marlene Lorenz of Chesterton; children, Sandy (Jeff) Swynenberg of
Norcross, Ga., Dan Lorenz of Chesterton, Sharon (Dwight) Baxter of
Greenwood, Ind., Karen (Mark) Georgiadis of Gibsonia, Pa. and Lisa (Edison)
Torres of Boynton Beach, Fla.; sister, Shirley (Jack) Havner of Chesterton,
sisters-in-law, Louise Lorenz and Ruby Lorenz, both of Chesterton;
brother-in-law, Harold Hockelberg of Rosehill, Ka.; grandchildren, Amy
(Scott) Walstrum, Eric (Sirirat) Swynenberg, Erin (Ben) Michael, Laura
(Ryan) Fortney, Charlie and Lynzi Lorenz, Charlie (Betsy) Baxter and
Michael, Katie and Becca Georgiadis and great-grandchildren, Emma and Evelyn
Fortney, Faith and Liliana Walstrum and Arie Swynenberg.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and siblings, Robert Lorenz, Marion Lorenz, Marge
Hockelberg and Leslie Lorenz.
Don’s family was
his pride and joy, he never missed an opportunity to celebrate life events
with his children and grandchildren.
Don graduated from
Chesterton High School in 1952 and many of his classmates may know him as
“Duck”. He was a member of the US Air Force from 1952 through 1957 and
served in Korea. Don worked with his father at Charles Lorenz & Son Trucking
& Excavating until 1976. He then worked as an operating engineer for Local
#150 and retired at age 65. Don was a 46 year member of Union Local #150, he
was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW.
A Mass of Christian
Burial will be held Monday, January 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick
Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton, Ind., with Father James
Meade officiating and Father Gerald Schweitzer con-celebrating. Burial will
follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation will be
held on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Edmonds &
Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, Ind., with a wake service at
4:00 p.m.
