Betty Atchison services Wednesday

Betty Atchison, age 87 of Valparaiso, Ind., formerly of Chesterton, Ind., passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Life Care Center of Valparaiso.

She was born on September 23, 1926, in Kaleva, Michigan, to Walter and Elizabeth Morris LaRue, both of whom preceded her in death.

On December 6, 1954, she married Robert W. Atchison, in Elkart, Ind., who preceded her in death in 1999.

Betty is survived by her children Darlene (Joe) Bond of Walkerville, Mich., Nathan W. (Wendy) Atchison of Elkart, Ind., and Roxanne (Robert) Walker of Chesterton, Ind., along with her grandchildren Lindsay, Sydney and Christopher Walker, Abigail and John Atchison, Tony (Naomi) Defalco, Michele (Cuma) Ellis, Christopher, Jordan and Shay Hultquist, Tim Bond and Carrie (Louis) Ferraher, eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Betty is also preceded in death by her siblings Margie Johnson, Ruth Niswonger, Pauline Adams, Mary Alice Gilson, Opal Gilson, Bill Gilson, Don Gilson and Jim Gilson.

She was a member of the VFW Post 2511, past President of the Ladies Auxiliary and was a bartender at the VFW for many years. She babysat for many of the neighborhood children. At the nursing home, she was a member of the Resident Counsel. She was very active playing bingo, doing crafts and was very helpful to her roommates. She also enjoyed Wheel of Fortune with her friends at the nursing home. One of her favorite holidays was Halloween. She enjoyed passing out candy to the children who came to visit the nursing home and dressed up every year: a pumpkin, a pirate, Betty Boop to name a few.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South 2nd Street, Chesterton, Ind., 219-926-1309, with burial following in the Chesterton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 29, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home with a VFW Ladies Auxiliary service at 7:30 p.m.
