Mary Bernadine “Bernie” LaHayne, age 93 of Porter, Ind., passed away Saturday, October 6, 2012 in Chesterton.

She was born April 22, 1919 in Peoria, Ill., to George and Mary Ann (Heller) Wattles, both of whom preceded her in death.

She was married on September 10, 1986 in Chicago, Ill., to Richard C. LaHayne, who survives in Porter.

Mary is also survived by her nephews, Ronald Wattles of Dowagiac, Mich., Jay (Barbara) Roberts of Phoenix, Ariz., Luke (Lois) McKinney of Pennsylvania and Richard Fager of Illinois; niece, Marlene (Lou) Mack of Largo, Fla.; grandniece, Karen (Randy) Strehler of Wheatfield, Ind.; grandnephew, Lee Wattles of Michigan; great-grandnieces, Addison Wattles and Kim and Melissa Strehler; great-great-grandnieces, Holliye and Kahlan; step-daughter, Holly (Shawn) Gould of Valparaiso, Ind.; step-grandsons, Erik Alliss and Zachary Gould, both of Valparaiso, Ind., and Nathan Alliss of Wheaton, Ill.; and step-granddaughter, Stefanie Alliss of Lake Havasu, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her step-sister, Geraldine McKinney; sister, Mildred Campbell; brother, Marsellus Wattles; and step-daughter, Lisa Alliss.

Mary was an area resident since 1955 coming from Chicago, Ill. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Duneland Historical Society and attended Porter Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, Ind., with Rev. G. Thomas Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, Ind.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
