John Boag Bloom, formerly of Dune Acres, passed away March 8, 2011 in
Overland Park, Kansas. Bloom was born September 7, 1925 in New Millport,
Pennsylvania, a son of Adlai and Margaretta Boag Bloom.
He married Veralda ("B") Bland on December 24, 1950 in New Millport. She
preceded him in death June 29, 2006.
Bloom served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1944 to 1946 and graduated
with honors from Penn State in 1951. He joined US Steel as a trainee in the
Johnstown, PA works in 1952. In 1963 he was promoted to Assistant Works
Auditor at US Steel South Works in Chicago, Ill. In 1967 he was named
Assistant Comptroller of US Steel Chemicals Division in Pittsburgh, Pa. and
then was promoted to Comptroller with US Steel Engineers and Consultants,
Inc. He was then transferred to US Steel Gary Works in Gary, where he was
appointed Manager of Accounting. In 1979 he was appointed to Comptroller of
US Steel’s Central Steel Division and later was appointed to Comptroller of
US Steel’s Supply Division. He retired in 1988.
Bloom was preceded in death by his wife, and a son, John E. Bloom in 2005.
He is survived by a son, William (Nancy) of Shawnee, Kansas, daughter in
law, Jan Bloom of Englewood, Fla., three grandchildren and five great
grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Al (Shirley) Bloom,
Clearfield, Penn. and Adlai (Alice) Bloom of LaVale, Maryland and several
nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until
4:00 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Private
burial will take place on Monday, March 14 in Abraham Lincoln National
Cemetery, Elwood, Ill.
