Services Saturday for Emma Myrtle Phelps 92

Emma Myrtle Phelps, 92, of Greensburg, died at 4:10 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2011 at the CrownPointe Assisted Living Center.

She was born on October 27, 1918 at Russell Springs, Kentucky, the daughter of Robert and Sallie (Lawless) Leach.

She moved to New Castle in 1938, Westport in 1946, the Letts community in 1950’s and to CrownPointe in 2008.

On January 17, 1938 in Esto, Kentucky, she married Orville Dowell Phelps, who preceded her in death on October 5, 2000.

Survivors include her daughters, Janice (Ron) Van Osdol of Lenoir, North Carolina and Alice Ann (Michael) Tokoly of Chesterton; her sister, Ruby Dimett of Cambridge City, Indiana; her grandchildren, Todd (Kelly) Van Osdol of Lenoir, North Carolina and Lauren Tokoly of Valparaiso, Ind.; her great granddaughters, Annarea Janice Van Osdol and Emma Grace Van Osdol of Lenoir, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Julia Grider, Jessie Irwin, Mary Robertson, Edna Webb, Grace Elliott and Pauline Stapp; her brothers, Oscar Leach, James Leach and Mack Leach.

She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter and enjoyed crocheting for family and friends. Her life was centered on her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her ultimate joy.

She attended the Letts United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home, Westport, Indiana, with Pastors Bill and Tammy Leak officiating. Burial will be at the Westport Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital or to the Hospice of Decatur/Shelby County.
