Muriel Schavey of Valparaiso passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the VNA
Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. She was 97.
Born Dec. 19, 1913 in Manitoba, Canada, she was the daughter of William
Edward and Mary Matilda (Lamb) Delmage, both of whom preceded her in death.
On Sept. 10, 1931, she married Harold Schavey, who preceded her in death in
1967.
Muriel is survived by her daughters Yvonne Carlson of Chesterton and Treva
Larson of Valparaiso; grandchildren Debbie Ray of Summertree, Tenn., Valerie
Vah of Chesterton, Sheldon Carlson of Collinsville, Ill., Christene Petersen
of Valparaiso and Patricia Shaffer of Valparaiso; 11 great grandchildren;
seven great great grandchildren; sister Eva Udick of Portage; special niece
Connie Dolak of Chesterton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Muriel was preceded in death by her grandson Jim Larson; sons-in-law Jim
Larson and Raymond Carlson; and siblings Clifford, Elsie, Mervyn and Jack.
Muriel was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, the Banta
Center and the Portage Historical Society. She was an avid seamstress, loved
to crochet and make ceramics, creating keepsakes her family now has.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 2 at the Christ Lutheran
Church, 2610 Campbell St., Valparaiso at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Jerry
Castleman officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until
time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to
Valparaiso Care and Rehab and VNA Hospice. Arrangements are under the
