Jay Daniel Howe of Portage passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in
Valparaiso. He was 88.
He was born July 17, 1922 in Demotte, Ind. to William and Hattie (Brooks)
Howe, who preceded him in death. He married Bernice Elizabeth Didelot on
April 20, 1946. She preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 2003.
Jay is survived by his sons, Daniel (wife Cheryl) Howe of Chesterton, Paul
Howe of Valparaiso, and Bruce (Cindy) Howe of North Judson, Ind.; daughter,
Jayne (husband Leon) Kwasniewski of Portage; 10 grandchildren; 11 great
grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and four sisters.
Jay was a lifelong area resident. He worked in Packaging/Shipping at Midwest
Steel, retiring in January, 1985. Jay was a member and usher at St. Patrick
Catholic Church in Chesterton. He was a member of the Midwest Steel Retirees
Club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 170 and former President of
the Babe Ruth League in Porter. Jay was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of
World War II and served as a Flight Engineer of B-24 Aircraft and
participated in the Over The Hump Campaign.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 4, at 11 a.m. at
St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, Chesterton, with Father
James Meade officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery,
Valparaiso. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2011 from 2 to 6
p.m. at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. An
American Legion service will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, and a wake
service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences
