Chesterton resident Shirley E. Greer (nee Raines) passed away Sunday, Nov.
28, 2010. She was 65.
Shirley was born on Jan. 14, 1945 in Jefferson City, Tenn. to Howard and
Mary Raines. Shirley’s family moved to Porter County, and she had been a
Chesterton area resident for 60 years. She was a member of Portage High
School graduating class of 1963. On Saturday, Nov. 21, 1964, she married
Donald Greer at the Valparaiso Baptist Church, and the couple just
celebrated 46 years of marriage.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband Donald; son John Greer (wife
Leanne) of Valparaiso; brother James Raines of Union Mills, Ind.; sisters,
Anna Bell of LaPorte, Dorothy Krause (husband Les) of Oakwood, Ga., Helen
Ackley of Westville, Linda Davis (George) of Chesterton; six grandchildren;
one great grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by parents Howard and Mary Raines, son Mark, sister
Agnes Papaioannou and brothers Harold and David Raines.
Shirley was an employee of Porter Memorial Hospital in medical records and a
CNA for a few years. She was also a cook at Duneland School Corporation
cafeteria for 20 years and worked for Carson Pierre Scott as a salesperson
for almost five years. She was a member of the Red Hatter’s, Sisters of
Christ Ministry and Advanced Master Gardeners of Porter County. She was an
active member of the Valparaiso Baptist Church and was a Sunday school
teacher for 30 years. Shirley loved her church, gardening, family and was a
loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister and will be
missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Valparaiso
Baptist Church or to the family.
Funeral service will be on Friday, Dec. 3 at noon from Rees Funeral Home,
600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, with Rev. Robert D. Liedtke and Rev. Kenneth
Gamblin officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
Visitation for Shirley will be on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5
to 8 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel. For information, call
