Service set for Michael McCarty

Chesterton resident Michael R. McCarty, age 66, died Monday, March 15, 2010, at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care.

He was born August 10, 1943, in LaPorte, the son of Robert L. and Mary Jane (Schumaker) McCarty, who preceded him in death.

On August 15, 1988 in Michigan City, he married Gloria J. Panozzo, who in 1995 also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters, Michelle S. Mellen of Michigan City and Amy H. McCarty of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his son, Christopher M. (fiancÚ Tracy) McCarty of Chesterton; grandchildren Richard Houck III, Troy M. Houck, Andrew C. McCarty, Blake McCarty, Alex and Claire Mellen, Mathew Switzer, and Lajos Gazdag; a sister, Kathi (Kingsley) Miner of Cullowee, N.C.; and nephews Matthew and Michael Miner.

Michael was a vice president with Euclid Machine in East Chicago, retiring in 2006. He had spent 23 years as a buyer with Bethlehem Steel.

He enjoyed boating, especially sailing, was a professional water skier, and belonged to the NRA. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage. To those who knew him, he was a strong, witty, and generous man. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, at St. Ann of the Dunes Church in Beverly Shores.
