John Gotlund of Chesterton passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at The
Waters of Duneland. He was 79.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Mae Gotlund of Chesterton; children
Barbara Huba (husband Larry) of West Lafayette, Robert Gotlund of Roxboro,
N.C. and Janet Leonhard (Matt) of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren Sara, Sean
and Corey; four nephews and a niece Ralph, Richard, Tim, Tom and Cheryl.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Sophie Gotlund, brother
Ralph Gotlund and sister-in-law Donna Gotlund.
Born in Chicago, he was a graduate of Chicago Technical College with a BS in
Mechanical Engineering. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean
Conflict. He served in Base Craft in Hawaii and on a Destroyer Escort out of
San Diego, Calif.
He worked in plant engineering for a number of companies in Northwest
Indiana and Chicago. He came to Indiana in 1972 for the start-up of
Continental Can Company in Portage from Oak Lawn, Ill. Early in his career
he was involved in writing technical manuals and publications. In his mid
career, he was involved in manufacturing equipment operation and
maintenance, and near the end of his career, he was involved in computerized
maintenance management systems.
He enjoyed traveling, gardening, working out at health clubs, investing in
the stock market and shopping. He was a past member of the Society of Plant
Engineers, Society of Technical Writers and Editors, Past President and
member of Sons of Norway, and Past Chairman of the Indian Boundary
Conservancy District.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd Street, Chesterton. There will be
a private family service to follow with a burial at Angelcrest Cemetery,
Valparaiso. The family wishes that memorials be given to the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church building fund or the charity of the donor’s choice. For more
