George J. Porumb, Sr. of Michigan City passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010
at 2:37 a.m. in Porter hospital, Portage. He was 61.
Born April 26, 1949 in Binghamton, N.Y., he was the son of the late George
J. & Lois (Melcher) Porumb. On June 24, 1984 in Carson City, Nev., he
married Mary Ann Topolski Granzo, who preceded him on May 4, 2005.
Surviving are daughters, Kimberly Fikes (husband Jason) of Jasper, Ala.,
Kimberly Bays (Dave), Michelle Granzo, and Stacy Granzo all of Michigan
City; son George J. Porumb, Jr. (wife Kelly) of Moline, Ill.; nine
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother Sherman Wilcox (Phyllis) of
New Mexico; and sisters Debby Brownfield (Larry) of Indiana and Pattee
Porumb and Denise Thomas, both of Kansas. He was preceded in death by son
Timothy Granzo and sister Octavia Ham.
He was a sergeant with the U.S. Army, having served two tours of duty in
Viet Nam. He also served on the Veterans Memorial Committee in Chesterton,
and was a life member of the VFW Post, Hobart. He had worked for the past 38
years at Mittal Steel, Burns Harbor as an operator for the air, gas, and
water treatment center. He enjoyed world traveling, golfing, his coffee
buddies at Lindo's Restaurant and spending time with his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24 at Ott/Haverstock
Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City with his brother-in-law,
Roger Alford officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Stanislaus
Mausoleum, Michigan City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and
Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral
Chapel. Full military services will be conducted Friday at St. Stanislaus
Cemetery by the VFW Post 2536 and American Legion Skwiat Post 451.
