Service set for Charles Gardner Hughes

Charles Gardner Hughes of Chesterton, formerly of Morrisville, Pa., passed away Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010 at the Waters of Duneland, Chesterton. He was 98.

He was born July 17, 1912 in Morrisville to Carlton Hughes and Sarah Gardner Hughes, who preceded him in death. On June 29, 1934 in Point Pleasant, Pa., he married Lillian Generaux Hughes, who preceded him in death.

Charles is survived by his children Charles (wife Barbara) Hughes of Morrisville and Carol (husband Richard) Michaels of Chesterton; grandchildren Susan (Robert) Quin, Deb Tarkane, Robert (Sandy) Allshouse, Sarah Hughes, and Christine Hughes; two step grandchildren Craig (Charlotte) Michaels and Trish Michaels; 12 great grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son and daughter-in-law Carl and Rita Hughes, and sister Margaret Schofield.

Charles was Superintendent of Building and Grounds for the Morrisville Presbyterian Church in Morrisville for 30 years where he held membership for 88 years. He was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran and an avid golfer, loving the game and playing until he was 91.

A memorial service will be Thursday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. from St. John United Church, 225 West Lincoln Ave., Chesterton with Pastor Katie Lindberg officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Morrisville. Memorials may be made to the V.N.A. Hospice Program of Porter County, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, IN 46383 or the Morrisville Presbyterian Memorial Fund.
