Russel Edward ‘Eddie’ Sheets passed away March 17, 2010 at the age of 74 in
Rapid City, South Dakota due to complications from cancer with his son and
daughter by his side.
He is survived by his children Mark Sheets (Kathleen) of Rapid City South
Dakota, and Robbin Trowbridge-Benko (Scott) of Chesterton Indiana and five
grandchildren, Kaia, Justus and Jordan Sheets and Eric and Steven
Trowbridge.
Five siblings also survive him: Gilbert Sheets, Charles Sheets, Dennis
Sheets, Candace Smith, and Pam Singer.
He is pre-deceased by one brother, Larry Sheets, one sister, Helen Titak,
and one grandson, John Trowbridge.
Edward was born September 30, 1935 in Rossville, Illinois to Gladys Vivian
Sheets (Hardy) and Gilbert Sheets.
Ed served in the United States Army for two years and an additional six
years in the Army reserves. During active duty he was with the 6th Armored
Division while serving in Japan and awarded the National Defense Service
Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter Badge.
As a young man he began studying Judo. Eddie went on to advance his skills
to 5th degree black belt and became a two time national Judo champion. Ed
also was a Judo instructor for many years at the Shorei-Goju in Hobart.
He was also a co-owner of the A&O Bar in Gary during the early 1960’s.
Edward worked as a metallurgist for United States Steel until his retirement
in 1985. He then went on to become a successful Real-Estate Agent.
Ed’s hobbies included windsurfing and yard sales.
A memorial service and luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at
the American Legion in Chesterton Indiana from 11:00 – 3:00. All friends and
family are encouraged to attend and celebrate Eddie’s life.
