Long-time Chesterton resident Robert E. Fulton Sr. passed away on Saturday,
Feb. 20, 2010 at the age of 92.
Born on June 19, 1917, he was the son of John and Lucille (Dost) Fulton of
Valparaiso. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers,
Hyland, Jack and Bill, and one sister, Rose Mary (Fulton) Kanschat.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia W. (Tucker) Fulton; sister
Marjorie (Fulton) Hill of Valparaiso; daughters Dorothy (Fulton) Bullock
(husband Trent) of Valparaiso, Dianne (Fulton) McCorkel (husband Michael) of
Chesterton; son Robert Fulton Jr. (wife Cindy) of Porter; 11 grandchildren;
19 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Throughout the course of his life, Robert pursued numerous endeavors,
discovering a natural affinity for mechanics, even before completing his
education at Indianapolis School for the Deaf in 1932. During WWII, he
worked for the Republic Aircraft Co. of Evansville, IN, manufacturing P-47
Thunderbolt fighter aircrafts, one of the most expensive fighter planes ever
produced. On March 10, 1945, Robert married his wife, Virginia, at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Valparaiso. He later established himself as a
highly-skilled carpenter, specializing in finish work and cabinetry, both
commercial and residential.
Other accomplishments included employment with the River Queen Boat Works
Company of Gary and with Westchester Public Library in Chesterton, from
which he retired in 1982. Robert was a long-time member of the Black Oak
Hearing Impaired Lion’s Club and the Northwest Indiana Deaf Club and always
had a fascination with science, history, and geography.
To his family and friends, Robert will forever be remembered as a wonderful,
loving man, with an extraordinary sense of humor and curiosity.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the
Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, with Pastor Joe
Ostifinski officiating. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the
