Sophie Hlista, 89, of Valparaiso, passed away Wednesday April 22, 2009 in
Valparaiso.
She was born April 8, 1920 in Groveton, Pa. the daughter of John and Helen (Kiebert)
Marion, both of whom preceded her in death.
In 1941 she married Walter Hlista, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by granddaughter Karen; great grandchildren, Elizabeth and
Bobby; twin brother and sister, Paul Marion of Tulsa, Okla. and Pauline
Pugliano of Crescent, Pa. and many nieces and nephews.
Sophie was also preceded in death by her sons, Walt and Ron former owners of
Standard Equipment in Chesterton; brothers, John, Tom, Joseph and Louis
Marion and sister, Helen Cantlon.
Sophie was active in the various ministries of the Seven Dolar Shrine in
Valparaiso and was a long time employee as baker and cafeteria worker in the
Portage School District. Years ago for many years she was an advocate in
local politics and in the Portage school system. Sophie was an avid
gardener.
A funeral service, Fr. Lawrence Heeg officiating, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday
April 26 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
A visitation will be held on Sunday April 26 from 1 p.m. until time of
service at 3 p.m.. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Aliquippa,
