Robert H. Ayres service set

Chesterton resident Robert H. Ayres passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 at the Waters of Duneland Health Care Center in Chesterton. He was 87.

Born on August 6, 1922 in Istanbul, Turkey, he was the son of Thomas H. and Mary (Zervos) Ayres. He graduated magna cum laude from New York University and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theatre during WWII. He was a member of Lehigh Acres, Fla., American Legion Post 323. He was the manager of Corporate Union Relations for Inland Steel, retiring in 1985. He was nationally recognized for his work by being inducted as a member of the American Iron & Steel Institute. He also served on the very first police commission in the town of Chesterton.

He is survived by daughter Donna P. Brown of Chesterton; sons Ralph D. Ayres of Chesterton and Charles H. Ayres of Portage; fiancée Patricia A. Ryan of Chesterton; sister Edith Boyd of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; brother-in-law Charles Munson; grandchildren Robert H. and Alec J. Ayres of Portage; and many nieces and nephews and several great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles H. Ayres, and sister Emily Munson.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 2:30 p.m. at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Interment will follow at Chesterton Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from noon until the time of service at 2:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. www.ee-fh.com
