Dune Acres resident Judy Ruth Smith died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009 at
Porter Hospital in Valparaiso. She was 65.
Born on Oct. 10, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas, she was the daughter of Robert
and Evelyn (Alstot) Hawkins. Judy’s father was a major in the Air Force, so
she had the opportunity early in life to travel and live in many interesting
parts of the country.
She is survived by her husband, George S. Smith Jr., a long-time resident of
Dune Acres and a member of St. Ann of the Dunes Catholic Church in Beverly
Shores; mother Evelyn Hawkins; dear sister Ronda Hawkins; George’s children
Debra Simanski (husband Joseph), George S. Smith III (wife Nanette), Karol
Witt, Kathleen Miller (Michael), and Patrick Smith (Sherri); nine
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, aunts,
uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Judy was a surgical nurse for many years before retiring. She frequently
attended Mass with her husband George and loved living in the dunes. They
traveled together for many years and especially loved vacationing in the
Caribbean. She was also an avid reader, loved playing cards, and enjoyed
music and crossword puzzles. She will be sadly missed by all her loved ones.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7 at White-Love
Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St., Chesterton, with Rev. John Barasinski
officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from noon until the
time of service at White-Love Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Chesterton
Cemetery. Family and friends may wish to have masses said for Judy at St.
Ann of the Dunes Catholic Church in Beverly Shores.
