Elmer C. Wahl, of Porter, passed away Thursday evening,
January 8, 2009 at VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. He was 85.
He was born November 1, 1923 in Westchester Twp. the son of
Clarence A. and Alvina C. (Brickner) Wahl, both of whom preceded him in
death.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years,
Kathryn H. Wahl.
He is survived by his son, Ron (Debbie) Wahl, of Porter; a
daughter, Susan K. (Mike) Webb, of Austin; three grandchildren, Eric Jacobs,
Josh (Kara) Jacobs, Travis Webb; three great-grandchildren, Aidan, Taegan
and Zane; a brother, Edgar (Ruth) Wahl, of Porter; sisters-in-law, Mary
Haire, of Chesterton, Louise Huber, of Hartford, Mich. and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Elmer was a WWII Army Veteran, Demolition Specialist 533,
Battle of the Bulge, serving six months in the European Theater of
Operations 661st Destroyer Battalion. He was a member of Augsburg
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Porter. He enjoyed fishing, wood carving and
ceramics. He greatly enjoyed collecting, smashing and recycling aluminum
cans. He retired from US Steel as a sheerman with 43 years service.
Funeral services, Pastor Erik Bernth officiating, will be at
11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12 at Augsburg Lutheran Church, 100 N. Mineral Springs
Rd., Porter. Entombment will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11
at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton.
