Beulah Mae Hopson dies at 85

Beulah Mae Hopson, age 85, passed away at Porter Hospital in Valparaiso on June 22, 2009.

A resident of Hobart for 43 years, she was born in East Gary on October 17, 1923 the daughter of Samuel L. and Cora Melton, both of whom preceded her in death.

On March 31, 1944, She married James L. Hopson, who passed away in 1963.

Mrs. Hopson is survived by her children, James L. (LouAnn) Hopson of Chesterton; Cheryl (William) Ferrence of Boulder City, Nev.; three grandsons, Will (Kelly) Ferrence of Little Rock, Ark.; Jim (Christy) Ferrence of Henderson, Nev.; Drew Hopson of Chesterton; one sister, Bessie Fredericks of Lake Station; four brothers, Forrest Melton of San Clemente, Calif.; Delmar (Jo) Melton of DeMotte; Cecil (Barb) Melton of Portage and John (Glenda) Melton of Grovertown; brothers-in-law, James Vogel of Chesterton and Herman Jacobsen of Lake Station and sister-in-law, Rose Melton of Michigan. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death also by two sisters, Ida Vogel and Barbara Jacobsen; three brothers, Samuel Melton; Leonard Melton and Charles Melton.

After graduating from East Gary High School, she was employed at American Bridge Company in Gary. During WWII while Jim was in the Air Force, she worked at Kingsbury Munitions Plant in Kingsbury, Ind. She is retired from General Telephone, where she was employed as a telephone operator for 17 years. Since her retirement in 1989, she enjoyed spending time with her family and staying in touch with her HBO friends from General Telephone.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 26 at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Portage.

A visitation will be Thursday, June 25 from 5-8 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage.
