William 'Bill' Bennett, Sr. service set

Chesterton resident William “Bill” Bennett Sr. died Friday, April 25, 2008 at his home. He was 80.

Born on April 29, 1927 in Vevay, Ind., he was the son of Clarence and Hazel (Fromann) Bennett.

He is survived by loving companion Annie Stainko of Chesterton; children William (wife Rita) Bennett of Florida and of Chesterton, Jody Bennett (Betty Hallett) of Chesterton, Jill (husband Jim) Pawlicki of Portage, Andy (Mary) Stainko of Stevensville, Mich., and George (JoAnn) Stainko of LaPorte; grandchildren Jimmy and Carly Bennett, Michael (Caroline) Yanovic, Jeremy (Tonya) Garland, Andy III, and Sarah Ann and George Jr. Stainko; great grandchildren Dillon Yanovic and Joey Garland; brothers Dalton Bennett of Madison, Ind., and Gary Bennett of Vevay; sister Merita Lester and her children Charles, Denver and Roger of Vevay; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by brothers Gerald and Stanley Bennett.

He retired in 1977 from U.S. Steel, where he worked as a shearer. He owned and operated Bennett’s Paving & Blacktopping Company for many years. He also owned numerous rental properties and was a landlord and businessman. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Chesterton American Legion Post 170, Porter V.F.W. Post 2511 and the Chesterton Moose Lodge 1623.

A visitation will be held on Sunday April 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. A joint American Legion and V.F.W. service will be at 7 p.m., and a funeral service with Pastor Bob Burton officiating will be at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be on Monday, April 28 in Vevay, with graveside services at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to V.N.A. Hospice Center. www.ee-fh.com
