Mildred A. Sexton, age 89 of Porter, passed away Sunday
December 7, 2008 at Whispering Pines Health Care Center, Valparaiso.
She was born on June 29, 1919 in Porter, the daughter of
William and Hazel Ehlers, both of whom preceded her in death.
On July 27, 1941 in Porter, she married William Sexton, who
preceded her in death in 2001.
She is survived by sons William F. (Zathoe) Sexton Jr. of
Merrillville, and Richard A. Sexton of Porter: grandchildren; Deborah
(Richard) Bowen, Amanda (Tony) McCrovitz, Richard S. Sexton and Stephanie
(Dale) Porch; great grandchildren, Anthony, John Paul and Gretta McCrovitz
and Mason Porch; sisters, Mable Brainerd, Mae Samuelson and Helen Hess.
She was preceded in death also by a sister Margaret Bobo and
brother William Bud Ehlers.
Mildred was a homemaker, a Precinct Committee Person for the
Republican party, she volunteered at the Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry,
was a den mother for the Cub and Boy Scouts, a life long bowler and enjoyed
gardening and fishing. She helped organize Porter’s centennial celebration
and started the first kid’s club in Porter above the old town hall. In 1997,
Mildred and Bill were named Citizens of the Year for the town of Porter.
Mildred was a member of Porter United Methodist Church and was a communion
steward for years.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 11 at
Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home 517 Broadway, Chesterton, with cremation to
follow at Heritage Crematory, Portage.
A visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 10
at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Westchester Food
