Kenneth E. Slater, of Porter, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at the VNA
Horton Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He was 86.
He
was born in Porter, on April 14, 1922, the son of Albert and Martha (Paschen)
Slater, both of whom preceded him in death.
On
April 19, 1952 in Porter, he married Dolores Wiseman, a union which has
lasted 56 years. She survives in Porter.
He
is also survived by a son, Rift (Pam) Slater of Chesterton; daughters,
Roxanne (Chet) Micinski of Valparaiso, Rancie (Mark) Lucas of Chesterton and
Radine (Julius) Kretlow of Westville; brothers-in-law who he and his wife
Dolores raised Dale Wiseman of Va. and Darwin (Jane) Wiseman of Chesterton;
grandchildren, Heather (Don) Adams, Jeff Micinski, Aaron Lucas, Eric Lucas,
Julia Kretlow, Alisa Kretlow, Heather Pawlik and Lesley Woods;
great-grandchildren, Keenan, Kyle, Logan, Maggie and Tucker Adams and Dainen
Woods. Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews.
He
was also preceded in death by a brother, Weldon “Buster” Slater and sisters,
Viola Stack, Alberta Stumpf, Ruth Lindquist and Harriet Hamilton.
Kenneth was a lifelong citizen of Porter and a graduate of Chesterton High
School. He served in the US Army during WWII serving three years in the
Italian Theater of War. He was retired from Midwest Steel as a tractor
repairman and mechanic. Kenneth was a member of Porter County Amateur Radio
Club, a member of the V.F.W., Midwest Steel Retirees Club, the National Rifle
Association and a former member of the American Legion and the Porter Fire
Department.
Funeral Services, Rev. Leslie Britt officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday,
May 29 at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
Interment will be in Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 p.m. at the Edmonds &
Evans Funeral Home. Memorials for Kenneth may be made to the Porter United
Methodist Church.
