Sam Panagiotis dies at 86

Sam Panagiotis, of Chesterton, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., passed away Friday, May 11, 2007 at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus. He was 86.

He was born Aug. 6, 1920 in Gary the son of Michael and Maria (Sakelaris) Panagiotis, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Janet (Coros) Panagiotis of Chesterton.

He is also survived by a daughter, Theodora (Steve) Vazanellis of Orland Park, Ill.; a son Michael Panagiotis of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandsons, Sam (Amy) Pabon, John Pabon, Jason (Lorena) Pabon and Jeffery Pabon; a granddaughter, Giannette Vazanellis; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Billirakis of Clearwater, Fla., Virginia Kamanaoff of Merrillville; a brother, Steve Panagiotis of Tarpen Springs, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Irma Panagiotis of Holiday, Fla. and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by sisters, Catherine and Crystal and brothers, Jimmy and John.

Sam was a retired carpenter of Inland Steel. He was a WWII Veteran and a member of St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church.

A funeral service, Fr. James Greanias officiating, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church, 352 Chicago St., Valparaiso in the old St. Paul School. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.

Friends may call Tuesday, from 2-8 p.m. with a 6 p.m. Trisagion service at Dykes Funeral Home (2305 N. Campbell St., Valparaiso).

The family wishes memorials to St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church.
