Ruth Gibbs Ton, of Chesterton, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007 at The
Waters of Duneland, Chesterton. She was 92.
She was born April 30, 1915 in Davenport, Fla., the daughter of William James
and Mabel Amelia (Pennington) Gibbs, both of whom preceded her in death.
On Aug. 24, 1945 in Chesterton, she married Walter Lloyd “Oz” Ton, who
preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son, James G. (Sharon) Ton, of Chesterton; grandsons,
James Walter (Heather) Ton of Valparaiso and Jeffery William Ton (fiancé
Sarah) of Chesterton.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Gibbs and a sister,
Mildred Pennington.
Mrs. Ton was Executive Secretary for Manley Bros. in Chesterton. She also
worked for New York Life Insurance Company in Gary, Ann Carter Real Estate in
Chesterton and was secretary of the Superintendent for Westchester Twp.
Schools during her working years.
She was a member of 1st United Methodist Church in Chesterton. She was a
member of B.P.W. (Business and Professional Women’s Club), former Sunday
School Superintendent at her church, building committee member and a member
of the missions committee.
Ruth was raised and went to school in Charleston, S.C. and came North for
work during the depression. She moved in with her aunt living in Morgan Park,
who was a retired Chicago school teacher. She resided there the rest of her
life. She was a strong supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and a loyal
Democrat. Ruth was a special person, who will be missed by all who knew her.
