Roma Louise Hale dies at 96

Roma Louise Hale (Benner), of Chesterton, passed away March 27, 2007 at VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso. She was 96.

She was born Feb. 8, 1911 in the Clark Station section of Gary, the daughter of Otis and Minnie Benner, who preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death on July 19, 1990 by her husband Richard F. Hale.

She is survived by four daughters, Sharon (John) Melchiori of Chesterton, Joan (Gene) Arnold of Knox, Judy (David) Hernandez of Heathrow, Fla. and Jean Kresho of Valparaiso; one son, Richard (Virginia) Hale of Hobart and dear friend Dottie Woods of Chesterton; 13 grandchildren including Wendy (Marty) Marciniak of Chesterton; 19 great-grandchildren including Hayley and John Marciniak of Chesterton and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Cade and Mae Curtis, a brother Otis Benner, two infant grandchildren and one infant great-grandchild.

Roma was a long-time member of St. John’s United Church, Chesterton. She joined on Feb. 20, 1929 and she was a life member of Olive Chapter #396, O.E.S., having received a 50 year pin in 1979 and 75 year pin in 2004.

Funeral services, Pastor Katie Lindberg officiating, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 2 at St. John’s United Church, 225 W. Lincoln Ave., Chesterton. Interment will be at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St. Chesterton. Olive Chapter #396 O.E.S. will have a memorial service Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to St. John’s United Church, or to VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso.
