John J. Spanier, of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 at his
home. He was 80.
He was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Hammond, one of nine children of James E. and
Otillai (Manlitz) Spanier, both of whom preceded him in death.
On Sept. 19, 1959 in Calumet City, Ill., he married Gayle Reuhl, who preceded
him in death.
He is survived by a son, Jamie (Karen) Spanier of Chesterton; a daughter,
Kelly (John) McMahon of Valparaiso and grandchildren, Joshua, Alexandra,
Samantha and Brandon.
John was an area resident since 1964, coming from Hammond. He was a graduate
of George Rogers Clark High School class of 1948 and also graduated from the
International Typographical Union of North America. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He worked as a printer for the Gary
Post-Tribune, retiring in 1991 and was a member of the American Legion Post
502.
Funeral services, Pastor Don Miller officiating, will be at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941
Central Ave. Portage. Interment will be at Concordia Cemetery, Hammond.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
