Helen Southwell, of Valparaiso passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 at the
VNA Hospice Center. She was 73.
She was born March 9, 1933 in Gary, the daughter of Louis and Evangeline (Cristos)
Kremizes, both of whom preceded her in death.
On Nov. 26, 1980 she married Eugene A. Southwell, who preceded her in death
on May 24, 2005.
She is survived by six children, Patti (Sam) Anello of Valparaiso, Lynn
(Kurt) Hodak of Lisle, Ill., Jeffrey Vagnone of High Ridge, Mo., Kirk
Southwell of San Francisco, Kim (Dolores) Southwell of San Rafael, Calif.,
William Glen Golden of Arcadia, Calif.; two sisters, Besse Delcourt of Oak
Lawn, Ill., and Katherine Radakovich of Hobart and eight grandchildren,
Kimberly Schultz, Olivia Palak, Lara Vagnone, Alex, Nick and Abigail Golden
and Laurel and Cole Southwell Johnson.
Helen was a graduate of Froebel High School in 1950, received a B.A. in
English from Indiana University Northwest where she then served as Assistant
to the Dean of Arts and Sciences for over 25 years, was a member of the
alumni association from which she received the President’s Award as Alumni
of the Year in 1998. She was co-founder of the School for Emotionally
Disturbed Children in Park Forest, Ill., listed in Who’s Who of American
Women, a former member of Altrusa and had also worked at the Southwell
Institute for Mental Health.
A funeral service was conducted on Monday morning, Jan. 1, at Moeller
Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, Angie Komenich, Ph.D.
officiating with private entombment at Graceland Mausoleum.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kremizes/Southwell Scholarship Fund at
Indiana University Northwest.
