Gladys Bernice Peterson, of Chesterton, formerly of Galva, Ill., passed away
Friday, July 13, 2007 at the Waters of Duneland Nursing Home. She was 100.
She was born Oct. 10, 1906 in LaFayette, Ill., the daughter of Lars A. and
Carie Wilberg, both of whom preceded her in death.
On Oct. 30, 1930 in Industry, Ill., she married Clarence G. Peterson, who
preceded her in death, Feb. 19, 1985.
She is survived by a son, Eugene W. (Shirley) Peterson of Alta, Ill.; a
daughter, Bernice “Bea” O’Brien of Galesburg and a son-in-law, Thomas Witzman
of Valparaiso; 19 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great
grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Audrey (Thomas) Witzman and
Joyce (Robert) Paxton; a granddaughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Gladys was educated in LaFayette schools and graduated from LaFayette High
School in 1924. After graduation, she worked in the Galva Creamery office for
four years. She did professional chair caning and ran the West Peter Shop out
of her home thirty years. She was a member of the Galva Unit 8, Mothers of
World War II, Inc., and the Old Settlers Association and VASA Lodge #683,
both of Bishop Hill. She was a former member of the First United Methodist
Church of Galva.
Funeral services, Rev. Martin R. Gutzmer officiating, will be at 1 p.m.
Saturday, July 21 at the Galva Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services.
Interment will be at the Galva Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Galva, the Old
Settlers Association, or the VASA Lodge #683.
Local arrangements are under the direction of White-Love Funeral Home,
Chesterton.
