Evelyn M. Read dies at 73

Evelyn M. Read, of Chesterton, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at the Waters of Duneland nursing home. She was 73.

She is survived by her husband James; two sons, Dr. James T. (Tina) Read of Dune Acres and Robert A. (Stephanie) Read of Porter; grandchildren, Emily (Tim) Schwaitzer, Sarah Beth Read, Jennifer Read, Angie (Craig) Summers, Jon Read, Paul Read; a sister, Patricia (David) Parry; brother-in-law, Dr. John E. Read and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester Munn and Rhoda Bonter, grandparents and several aunts.

Evelyn was a member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority and the Michigan City Yacht Club. She was a teacher and superintendent of the 1st United Methodist Church Sunday school. She also was an avid bridge player and belonged to the Mental Health Bridge Club. Evelyn was involved with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts while her children grew up. She was also involved with her children’s high school sports teams.

She graduated high school in 1952 and attended Depauw University in Greencastle, Ind. She was a great wife, special mom, and a caring friend.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. with Pastor Rev. Steve Buchelt officiating at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Interment will take place at Chesterton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Funeral Home.

Memorials for Evelyn may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Harbor Light Hospice Center.
