Michael R. Anton, of Dune Acres, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 12,
2006 at home surrounded by his beloved family. He was 94. He was born in
East Chicago, Ind. Aug. 1, 1912 the son of Hungarian immigrants Katalin and
Michael Anton.
He is survived by his wife Helen and three of his four children, Joanne
Smith and her husband, Bruce, Virginia York and Michael R. Anton Jr. and his
wife Nancy.
He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Robert J. Anton and Robert’s
wife Diana, grandchild, Joseph York and his two brothers, Andrew and Carl.
Michael and Helen were married on Jan. 30, 1937 in Valparaiso. This year
they celebrated 69 wonderful years of marriage. He grew up in East Chicago
and was a self-made business man before he moved to Dune Acres in 1950. He
built his own home and retired from Inland Steel after 28 years of service.
He attended Indiana University Northwest and was Vice President of Anton
Insurance.
Michael was a devoted husband and father who had a deep love of the Indiana
Dunes. He was a good man who was considerate, respectful and principled.
Many winters Michael and Helen vacationed in Pompano, Fla. with his good
friend and brother-in-law, Robert Gorman.
He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren including
Robert’s child, Robert Anton.
Joanne’s children are William S. Murray Jr. and his wife Gene and their two
children, Brandon and Elizabeth; Karen Karmolinski and her husband Roger and
their two children Richard and Lauren; Kathy Durand and her husband Tom and
their three children Madeleine, Christian and Claire; John Lowery and his
wife Judy and their two children Johnathon and Thomas; Judy Kittridge and
her husband Robert and their two children Tyler and Andrew.
Virginia’s children are Shiela Sahs and her husband David and their two
children Amanda and Adam; Janet Narbutis and her husband Andrew and their
three children Matthew, Laura and Carrie.
Michael Jr.’s children are Michael R. Anton III and his companion Julie and
his children Elizabeth, Anna and Holly; Julie Braveman and her husband Chris
and their child Hayden; Douglas Anton and his wife Tiffany and their child
Chae; Jim Anton and Megan Levendowski and her husband Richard and their
child Vivian.
A funeral mass, Fr. James Meade and Fr. Terry Bennis officiating, will be at
11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet
Rd., Chesterton.
Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home,
517 Broadway, Chesterton. There will be a wake service at 7:45 p.m.
