Charles Basil Cross, 79, of Michigan City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 15 at The Arbors of Michigan City after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 24, 1926 in Minot, N.D., the son of George C. and Vera (Smithers) Cross, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by nieces, nephews, friends from around the world and a close group of intimates.

Cross studied theater at Northwestern University in Chicago graduating with friends Cloris Leachmann and Paul Lynde. He served in the military in the 1940s and then returned to Chicago to finish his education and to begin a career that lasted over 30 years with Marshall Field and Company. He began in the early 1960s as an assistant buyer and later became buyer of antiques and head of the fine furniture department. Cross traveled frequently to Europe to acquire antiques for Fields.

He was also known for his yearly displays in the Trend House and for creating the Crossroads shop. He was highly regarded among antique buyers in America as being an authority on antique English furniture and accessories.

Upon retirement, Basil returned to his first love, the theater. His involvement in the Dunes Summer Theatre showcased his acting, singing and dancing talents as he performed, wrote and directed many musicals and reviews there.

His love of art led him to a seat on the Board of Directors at the Lubeznik Center in Michigan City. A very active member and patron, Basil was instrumental in the dedication of a room at the center named after his lifelong partner, Bill Brincka.

Over 40 years of hard work have made the beautiful gardens at his home a creation enjoyed by many and recognized by the Daylilly and Hosta Societies of America.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22 at Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City.

Visitation will be Saturday from 3-7 p.m. and Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to Dunes Art Foundation, P.O. Box 384, Michigan City, IN 46361.
