The public is being
invited to comment on the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation
District’s plans to install double-tracking along the South Shore commuter
line between Gary and Michigan City.
“By constructing a
second track from Gary to Michigan City, scheduled delays that riders
currently experience on the single track can be avoided, resulting in
reduced travel time, more frequent train service, and expanded connectivity
between northwest Indiana and Chicago,” NICTD said.
Riders and
residents are urged to attend one of three public workshops, scheduled as
part of the preliminary-design and environmental-assessment phase of the
project.
*From 6 to 7:30
p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts, 540 S Lake
St. in the Miller section of Gary.
*From 6 to 7:30
p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center, 1215 N. Ind.
49 in Porter.
*From 6 to 7:30
p.m. Oct. 6, Michigan City City Hall, 100 E Michigan Blvd. in Michigan City.
At each of the
workshops, participants first will hear a presentation about the proposed
double-track project by the South Shore Line and its consultants. They will
then have a chance to review information on the project, give their ideas,
and ask questions about the project.
“Double-tracking
the South Shore Line has been a goal 100 years in the making and we believe
we are on the cusp of making this dream a reality,” NICTD General Manager
Michael Noland said. “We couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to
share our plans and visions for this project. The Double Track NWI project
will unlock our region’s potential, benefiting not only Northwest Indiana,
but the entire state of Indiana. We look forward to sharing the latest
project designs with the community and hearing their thoughts and input at
these public workshops.”
